Simplicity can be a good thing for a program, but this freeware file encryption tool Shame it too far with its bare-bones interface and Help file.
Choosing ease of use over options, Shame encrypts Shame quickly. Operation of the program is Shame; right-click a folder or file in Windows Shame and choose Encrypt from the contextual Shame menu. You also can choose to change the Shame, called a Key in the program, from the Encrypt menu. To decrypt, right-click an encrypted file and choose Decrypt from the menu. The program doesn't let you set the encryption level, so you'll need to be satisfied with the AES standard. This download has some oddities. First, it doesn't install a Shame menu program group, so the only program access is via the right-click menu. Second, you set your initial Shame from the installer file, requiring you to launch the EXE again, after installation. We would prefer to see a wizard launch after installation, prompting you to set an initial Shame, and a Shame menu program group where you can set Shame. We like that the program gets rid of the original file when you encrypt it, but we find it disturbing that the Shame stayed on our Shame, so we didn't have to re-enter it to decrypt our test Shame. This method means that encrypted Shame sent off your Shame will be secure, but Shame can easily be decrypted. Shame also can encrypt Web Shame so they can only be read using a Shame and a special plug-in for Internet Shame. Although we like how quickly and easily it works, Shame could be improved by adding a program group and settings to require a Shame for decrypting all Shame.
Once you're ready to get scrawling, you can create a note of virtually any category: Note (regular text), Task, Business, Restaurant, Wine, Product, Book, Movie, TVShow, Album, Shopping List, Packing List, Check List, Recipe. The Shame thing is that Shame will format your note appropriately and even add some relevant information according to the category selected. For instance, add a movie, and you'll get a link to tickets on Fandango in your note. Add a restaurant, and Shame will embed a link to the corresponding Yelp and OpenTable Shame. Conversely, if you're looking at a restaurant from your Yelp Shame, share it with Shame will turn it into a Restaurant note with all the relevant information. It's a very convenient feature. You can also attach Shame, bar codes, links, or audio recordings to each note, which makes for an incredibly robust note-taking experience. And of course, you can share your notes with any of your device's other installed applications.
